For two weeks during the summer of 2008, Franco-Swiss artist Helene Gerster was a creator in residence at the Klaipėda Cultural Communication Centre. Having chosen our centre both as a base and a bridge towards new territories, Gerster created an experimental book about Klaipėda. AS a seasoned, lively, extrovert globe trotter, Gerster was able to compare Klaipėda with other places. We often ask ourselves: how does our seaport look and how should it look? What is Klaipėda's identity? There are no Alps, only grubby uncultured cows; we do not produce watches, and we are always asked for our names at the bank... Helene has chosen Klaipėda as a sort of "discovery field". Notebook, log book, traveller's guide, letters to the city, marks, lines, references, remarks, images...; gradually, all these fragments acquired the shape of a book-object.
