Born under the sign of Capricorn, and – according to the Oriental horoscope – in the Year of the Rooster. It is comely, fondled both by the sea-breeze and people's attention. What about its temper? It has its own temper indeed, as well as its Lithuanian eyes. Its pursuits are cultured. It is steadily growing in height and gaining weight.
Since the very beginning, its name has been making a solid impression: Klaipėda Culture Communication Centre. Or just Kulturpolis. It's a treat to observe how such a serious institution as KCCC becomes just Kulturpolis in public cultural discourse. It's gratifying as it means that formal respectability has been replaced by active work. Let‘s go to Kulturpolis, today at Kulturpolis, Kulturpolis will present...
Kulturpolis is not an organization anymore – it’s a phenomenon. And it's the best thing that could ever happen to it. Dignified titles and names, numbers of projects, and fields of activities – all of them have got out of drawers and have gone looking for adventures and friends. Year by year Kulturpolis' movements are turning more integral and purposeful: starting from Now Art Now Future, one of the most interesting Lithuanian biennials, further on to Kulturpolis cinema, discussions, lectures, and to the creative mess of Art Courtyard. And yes, of course – a lot of exhibitions, art-actions, and projects. Perhaps one should recite, note down, align and count facts in the catalogue issued on the occasion of the 5th anniversary. But what for? Kulturpolis is alive, attractive, needful, and beloved.
Kulturpolis has a certain kind of idealism – the belief that art can be exciting and necessary for everyone. Or at least for every second one. Therefore Kulturpolis tickles, attracts, and provokes incredulous people, unbelieving that the soul, like the body, needs food too. Kulturpolis massages the feet of their aesthetic perception, pinches conservative cheeks, gently strokes their curls and bald heads of curiosity.
Yesterday one used to wonder how long their enthusiasm would last. Today the more gripping question is: what if Kulturpolis succeeds?
Different projects by Kulturpolis have one single core, or a common denominator – the audience, participants, attenders. Both those who are striving for culture themselves and those caught by the wrist in the street or those browsing the web portal Kulturpolis.lt. The phrase Kulturpolis' project today means something truly cultural, intriguing and interactive.
One loves not titles and names, even not good deeds. It’s the spirit, aura and relations that win our hearts.
And Kulturpolis, celebrating its 5th anniversary, is charming indeed.
